The BBAA Annual Awards Dinner on 2nd July will be held at the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and sponsored by the City of London Corporation.

The call for nominations for the 2012 BBAA National Awards have now been launched.  These Awards are now open for nominations and BBAA invites Angel investors, VCs, SMEs, advisors and all those working with early stage investing to put forward their nominations to win one of these prestigious awards. The deadline for all nominations is Wednesday the 20th June; these nominations will then be judged by an independent expert panel.

Six carefully selected awards will be presented to both entrepreneurs and investors to represent achievements in the early stage investment market including, the prestigious “Angel Investor of the Year” award. BBAA encourage you to send in your nominations and join us in celebrating “Success in the Angel Investing Community” at the BBAA’s Annual Awards Dinner, taking place on Monday 2nd July 2012.

The awards this year will focus on key areas of the market where angels have made investments, such as angel-backed deals in technology and the social impact arena. Also being highlighted are best syndicated deal of the year, early stage team of the year and best female investment of the year, to encourage more men and especially women to recognise the opportunity to use their financial wealth and business expertise to invest in innovating entrepreneurs and the growth of Britain’s small businesses. The 6 Awards for 2012 are:

1. Angel Investor of the Year - CLICK HERE for downloadable nomination form.

This award recognises the individual angel investor that can be shown to be a very active investor in start-up and early stage businesses during the past year- they can be new to investing or experienced. The award will seek to identify the investor who has not only brought their financial capacity to the businesses but provided clear added value to their investee portfolio, offering experience, skills, contacts and mentoring to support successful growth and potential exit. The investor can be acting alone or as part of a syndicate and is open to men and women.

2. Early Stage Team of the Year - CLICK HERE for downloadable nomination form.

This award is open to any VC fund, angel co-investment fund; business angel network or syndicate. The team will have completed a significant number of deals throughout 2010-11 in innovating early stage businesses, as well as supporting its existing portfolio, including potentially achieving some exits or evidence of successful growth. The team will have also shown an active role to raise new funds or to grow their existing funds or to further develop their investment potential.

3. Best Female Investment of the Year - CLICK HERE for downloadable nomination form.

This award is aimed at businesses in any sector which are led by women, including a woman CEO or CTO and preferably, including other women in senior positions on the Management team/Board - and that have successfully accessed Angel Investment during the past twelve months. Alternatively where the investment has been made by a woman investor, either acting alone or as lead of a syndicate (investors can be male/female).  Nominations for this award must demonstrate that the business is innovative or addresses a key social or market challenge and that the investment has significantly supported the growth potential and competitiveness of the company. Both the business and the investors should be identified for the award.

4. Social Impact Investment of the Year - CLICK HERE for downloadable nomination form.

This award is aimed at businesses, including social enterprises, that are carrying out activities with social objectives, addressing an identified societal or global challenge and that have received investment either from an angel network; or a specialist social impact fund or new area of funding. Nominations for this award must demonstrate that the business is bringing an innovative approach or new business model that is likely to achieve significant social impact and that the investment will support the growth of the company and increase the potential impact of its activities. Both the business and the investors should be identified for the award.

5. Best Syndicated Deal of the Year - CLICK HERE for downloadable nomination form.

This award is open to syndicates of angels either as part of a business angel network; or structured group or syndicates ( minimum 3 investors) who have successfully structured a deal including  a number of investors in an early stage business and should include a lead angel. The syndicate can have done the whole investment or co-invested alongside other finance sources including VC funds, seed funds, co-investment funds or banks. This can be at any stage in the funding cycle. The business, deal structure and parties involved will also be considered in making this award.

6. Best Technology Investment of the Year - CLICK HERE for downloadable nomination form.

This award is aimed at start-up or early stage businesses in any aspect of technology including ICT and digital media mobile ( and including-e- commerce and  m-commerce), or clean tech; or med tech; and that have received angel investment in the past twelve months. Nominations for this award must demonstrate that the business has strong innovation/disruptive capacity in the market or responding to key challenges and demonstrating a defensible competitive position with capacity to achieve high growth.  Applicants must show that the investment has facilitated the growth potential and competitiveness of the company. Both the business and the investors should be identified for the award.
