CruiseCompare.co.uk Benefits from Investment

A website designed to help holidaymakers find the best deal for their cruise break has benefited from a £100,000 investment.

 

CruiseCompare.co.uk was launched by former DFDS Seaways online marketing manager Tom Fotheringham at the start of the year, and hopes to use the £96,000 provided by the fund to boost its internet and media profile.

 

The site offers the chance to browse deals from various holiday providers, and to post their pictures and stories in the community section.

 

Funding Boost for Software Company amBX

A software company has secured a £700,000 investment as it gears up for the launch of its responsive LED lighting technology into the international gaming market.

 

Middlesbrough-based amBX has developed remote control technology that can set LED lighting to respond to moving images or different soundwaves and is now working alongside gaming firm Mad Catz Interactive to bring the technology to PC users.

When BBC television viewers watch United later this year, a drama about the death of eight “Busby Babes” in the 1958 Munich air crash, they will be unaware of one key player in the filming – innovative finance.

 

The drama about Manchester United, starring David Tennant, who formerly played the lead role in the Doctor Who sci-fi series, is one of numerous television and cinema productions filmed in north-east England during the past 18 months.

The CEO of Solvert Limited aims to create a £100m manufacturing plant on Teesside which can supply renewable raw materials to local industry.

 

Plastics Firm Re Pet Confident of Meeting Targets

A newly launched plastics manufacturer has secured £1.2m of investment as it looks to become one of the biggest businesses of its kind in the country and establish a £15m turnover.

 

Re Pet was set up last year to supply the packaging industry with recyclable plastic sheeting, which is used to make things like food cartons for the UK’s supermarkets.

 

Grant Helps Film-Makers

Newcastle’s Bonafide Films has secured £300,000 in funding as it bids to develop a range of film and TV projects. The two-year-old company has been given £150,000 from Arizona investor Rockford Asset Management.

Bonafide’s founders Sacha Alexander and Margery Bone aim to put the money into a range of upcoming projects, such as the sit-com Undercover, sic-fi  series Korridor and Peter Straughan short production Gee Gee.

Cash Rolling in for Application Company Masher

A company that is helping people put together their own movies from their videos and photos to put on social networking sites has won £550,000 investment.

 

The seed of the web-based application made by Gateshead-based Masher was developed at BBC Worldwide’s BBC Motion Gallery unit, and was acquired in 2008 by a consortium of private investors.

 

Support for Software with a Vision for the Future

Former Northumbria University Student Union president Ross Linnett has secured £100,000 to continue development of software that helps dyslexic and visually-impaired web users.

Linnett’s Recite Me software allows users to adapt websites to fit their particular preferences, translating text into more legible fonts, changing the colour contrast and reading out the content on the page. 

Newcastle Entrepreneur Helps Battle Anorexia

1.6 million people in the UK are affected by eating disorders each year. A computer programmer from Newcastle has turned into an entrepreneur to help save the life of his anorexic relative. Paul Dayan, 54, was so desperate to help his relative battle her eating disorder, he decided to try and help improve her eating habits.
